Europe Heat Wave 2025: Paris Hits 104°F as Heat Alerts Expand

Europe heat wave 2025 has gripped the continent, with Paris forecast to reach a scorching 40°C (104°F) this Tuesday. Health authorities issued red alerts as the season’s first major heat wave intensified across France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

In France, the national weather agency Meteo-France placed several departments under the highest red alert, with the Paris region particularly hard hit. More than 1,300 schools were expected to be partially or fully closed, according to the Education Ministry. Visitors without tickets were advised to postpone their Eiffel Tower visit, while the summit was closed until Thursday.

Meanwhile, 17 of Italy’s 27 major cities are currently experiencing a heat wave, according to the Health Ministry. In contrast, temperatures in Portugal began to fall, with Lisbon expected to reach 33°C (91°F), although inland areas could still hit 43°C (109°F).

Public spaces in Paris, including parks and outdoor venues, have adjusted operating hours or closed temporarily to reduce health risks. City authorities also distributed water and opened cooling shelters for vulnerable populations.

Meteo-France also warned of the heightened risk of wildfires due to drought-stricken soil and a lack of rain in June. Climate experts say the Europe heat wave 2025 may signal a hotter-than-ever summer, with France potentially facing a tenfold increase in heat wave days by 2100.

According to the European Environment Agency, heat waves are now the deadliest natural hazard in Europe. In 2022 alone, excess deaths from extreme heat surpassed 60,000 across the continent. The Europe heat wave 2025 may push those numbers higher if mitigation measures fall short.
