Russia warns US over North Korea during a high-profile diplomatic visit. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov urged the United States, South Korea, and Japan to avoid forming a security alliance that targets Pyongyang. His remarks followed a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the coastal city of Wonsan.
Lavrov also delivered a personal message from Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Russian officials, the visit aimed to deepen strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Russia and North Korea Strengthen Military Ties
In recent years, ties between Russia and North Korea have grown significantly. North Korea has reportedly provided troops and ammunition to support Russia’s war in Ukraine. In return, Russia has offered military and economic assistance.
As a result, the United States and its allies are increasingly concerned. Many fear that Russia may transfer sensitive technologies that could enhance North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities.
Following talks with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, Lavrov accused Washington and its partners of escalating tensions. He specifically criticized their expanding military presence near North Korea.
“We warn against exploiting these ties to build alliances directed against anyone, including North Korea and, of course, Russia,” Lavrov stated, as quoted by Tass.
Trilateral Drills Raise Tensions
The warning comes shortly after the US, South Korea, and Japan held a joint air drill near the Korean Peninsula. The exercise involved American nuclear-capable bombers. Moreover, the defense chiefs from all three countries met in Seoul to coordinate regional strategy.
During the meeting, they urged North Korea to halt all provocative and unlawful activities. However, North Korea responded by calling the drills a rehearsal for invasion.
Lavrov defended North Korea’s nuclear stance. He said the country’s weapons are developed internally, and he expressed support for its right to self-defense.
Pyongyang Supports Moscow’s War in Ukraine
Choe reaffirmed North Korea’s “unconditional” support for Russia’s war against Ukraine. Lavrov thanked the country for what he described as assistance from North Korean troops in repelling Ukrainian forces near Russia’s Kursk region.
Although these claims remain unverified, they reflect growing military alignment between the two nations.
Wonsan Resort Highlighted in Talks
The meeting took place in Wonsan, where North Korea recently opened a massive beach resort. The government claims it can host nearly 20,000 visitors. Lavrov praised the facility and expressed optimism about Russian tourism to North Korea.
“We will do everything we can to facilitate this, including new air travel connections,” he said.
Nonetheless, international tourism to North Korea remains limited. The country has yet to fully reopen its borders since the pandemic and continues to restrict access for most foreigners.
